Addressing dental emergencies

During dental emergencies, it is important that you know what to do until you can get to your appointment.

  • If your mouth is bleeding, use sterile gauze or a clean cloth and apply mild pressure to the wound.
  • If the wound is bleeding heavily or you suspect you have a broken jaw, it is imperative you seek emergency medical care.
  • For broken, or knocked-out teeth, be sure to keep the tooth and save it in a container with milk or saline solution. If you are able to see a dentist in a timely manner, your tooth may be able to be restored.

At Noosa Family Dental, Dr Adele Miller and her team hold years of experience providing state-of-the-art care and dental services to residents across Noosa and Tewantin. Whether it’s a toothache, a fractured or lost tooth, a lost filling, or something else, we will be available to address the issue as soon as possible!

When to see your dentist

Accidents and emergencies happen day and night. Some may need urgent care, whereas others can be treated during a regular dental appointment. It is important to know what is classified as an emergency that requires immediate care. Simply put, a dental emergency is any problem that requires urgent treatment, either to save a tooth, stop ongoing bleeding or reduce and treat severe pain.

Most injuries and trauma to the mouth should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible. Getting an emergency dental appointment within 30 minutes can make the difference between saving or losing a tooth!

A painful tooth

An untreated infection or abscess can cause significant pain and affect your ability to eat, talk, and even sleep comfortably.

These infections often develop as a result of untreated decay, a deep filling, a crack in the tooth, or gum disease. Once the nerve inside the tooth has died and an abscess has formed, the infection must be addressed promptly. Treatment typically involves either root canal therapy to remove the infection and save the tooth, or extraction to prevent the infection from spreading and relieve pain.

A sensitive tooth

There are many reasons a tooth can become sensitive, but the good news is that most causes are simple to treat when caught early. Seeking help as soon as the problem appears can make all the difference — if left untreated, the underlying issue has time to progress and become more complex.

If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity, it’s important to see your dentist for a proper assessment. Common causes include tiny cracks, exposed dentine, tooth decay, or leaking fillings. With early diagnosis and treatment, you can prevent the discomfort from worsening and avoid more costly or painful dental problems in the future.

A broken tooth

Broken teeth or fillings are important to treat early. Even if the tooth isn’t causing pain, a broken tooth can lead to infection if left for a prolonged period.

If a piece of tooth has broken away from an existing filling, removing the old filling and replacing it with a filling or crown is often is the best solution. This method protects the tooth from further damage and creates a strong, stable restoration.

An impacted wisdom tooth

When Wisdom teeth or other teeth become impacted, meaning they don’t have enough space to fully emerge, they can cause pain, swelling, or infection. It’s important to have your dentist examine the area to assess how the tooth is positioned and prevent further complications.

Our experienced emergency dentists can determine whether the impacted tooth requires removal or if it can be managed conservatively with monitoring and good oral hygiene
